Product Description

This is a set of three STEM Challenges that all have something to do with seeds. It’s the Seed Series- a new feature of Teachers are Terrific! The series challenges are somewhat seasonal, but most of the challenges can be used during any time of year. So, whenever you are studying about plants and seeds these challenge will work perfectly.

Please note: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately.

Students will follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process for each challenge. The packages contain step-by-step procedures for the teacher that are clearly marked with the Design Process steps. The included lab sheets for students are also marked. Students will plan independently and then with teammates to create the best solution to the design challenge.

Some specifics about each design challenge:
In Seed Dispersal students will be using materials to design and build a representation of one of the ways seeds are dispersed. Each group will be assigned one of the seed dispersal methods and then must determine which of the materials can be used to best build a model. Finally, the teams will share their creation and demonstrate how it works. Students will be incredibly creative in finding a way to disperse the seeds and will love sharing their final product. It should also be noted that this challenge would be great as a culminating activity for your study of plant growth and students should already have some knowledge of plants and the seed development process. I have included a seed dispersal chart for your convenience. You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes: Balloons, Tissue paper, Paper clips, Rubber bands, Straws, Yarn, String, Foil, Masking tape, Cotton balls, Craft sticks, Pipe cleaners, Pan of water, Seeds, and other materials of your choice.

In Build a Bird Feeder students will be using materials to design and build a bird feeder that must be functional and follow construction constraints. Students can view and critique images of bird feeders to help gather ideas and then sketch their own versions. After discussing their options students will list materials needed for the task based on those items you have gathered. The completed bird feeders can be painted and varnished in order to be used outdoors. You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes: Cardboard pieces, Boxes of all sizes, Plastic water bottles, Craft sticks, Straws, String, Pipe cleaners, Cardboard tubes, Cardstock, Paint and brushes, Varnish, Birdseed, hot glue guns, and glue.

In Build a 3D Flower Model students will be using materials to design and create a flower model that has dimensional qualities and all the intricate parts labeled. They will choose the materials they wish to use to showcase the flower parts and are challenged to make the parts appear real, while still using their creativity and imagination. You will need to have worked on the parts of the flower before tackling this challenge as some background knowledge will be necessary. I have included some drawings of flower parts for your use and a chart with the flower parts and jobs listed, but there are no specific lessons included about the flower parts and their functions. You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes: Construction paper in many colors, Raffia or coarse string, Brown paper or paper towels,
Tissue paper in many colors, Small beads, Straws, Pipe cleaners in many colors,
Green yarn, Yellow and white pom-poms, Cardstock or foam board, White glue,
Clear tape (optional), and Labels .

Note: Each challenge includes a scoring rubric and a file with editable forms. The editable forms include lab sheets, materials lists, rubrics, and constraints pages.
