I designed this product to go with several book about African American that combine literacy with STEM activities. The books are about Jackie Robinson, Ruby Bridges, George Washington Carver, Bessie Coleman and Dr. King. Books featured are Testing the Ice, Ruby Bridges Goes to School and Biographies on Bessie Coleman and George Washington. Just activities about King are included, for many have books about him in your own collection.
The activities can be adapted to fit your teaching area. The activities can not all be completed in one day. However several of them can be used after reading the books mention to the class as a read aloud. There are NO comprehension questions included. A note taking sheet, number sense sheet, and place value sheet is included. I also included a group expectation sign along with some STEM challenges on its own piece of paper to be copied for groups.
These activities can stretch for a week or a month depends how you choose to use them.
I intended for this open ended product to be a review of skills learned, practice skills or introduction of skills to use during the year. I also designed this to include critical thinking and problem solving.
There are several activities that can be used as informal assessment.
Some activities can also be projected on a white board if you want to go paperless.
