### Description

If you need to catch the attention of your elementary students this project will do it! This GREAT package contains a complete lesson plan for a STEM lab experience. The topic is Newton's Second Law of Motion---but it is presented in a very kid friendly way!

What is the challenge?

Students will be blowing marshmallows through tubes and determining distances traveled. They will use two lengths of tubes and place the marshmallows in different places and then compare the results. They will also calculate average flights, complete a data table, and more! Discussions of what happens and why are engaging and fun- almost as fun as blowing through the tubes! Students will determine an extension of the activity and can complete several. This includes a writing task!

You will need materials for this activity: cardboard or plastic tubes in two lengths, marshmallows, plastic wrap, measuring tools, calculators, and space to work! A great substitute for the marshmallows are pom-poms! They are easier to blow through the tube!

This will take from 2-4 class sessions!

Examples could include an unbalanced force on one side of a ball can make it start moving; and, balanced forces pushing on a box from both sides will not produce any motion at all. Assessment is limited to one variable at a time: number, size, or direction of forces. Assessment does not include quantitative force size, only qualitative and relative. Assessment is limited to gravity being addressed as a force that pulls objects down.

Examples of motion with a predictable pattern could include a child swinging in a swing, a ball rolling back and forth in a bowl, and two children on a see-saw. Assessment does not include technical terms such as period and frequency.
