Finland STEM Boat Design/Race
This STEM lesson is designed to get students thinking about the science concept of sink or float as it applies to different materials. This easy STEM activity asks students to work cooperatively with a team to design and test a boat that can float, hold weight and is wind powered. This connects to the many boats used in Finland along their archipelago. I have designed this lesson to pair with my Finland Travel Book, which can be found in my TpT store. With social studies, science and real world connections coming together in one lesson, it is a win all around!
This download includes:
1. Two STEM activities to get students thinking creatively. First design a boat. Then make adjustments to make the fastest boat possible
2. STEM lesson recording sheet for students to record all parts of the STEM process
3. Pictures of my class and their own boat designs
I recommend pairing this lesson with an introduction to the concept of sink or float. In the download, I share the resources I used with my own class when teaching this lesson to give you ideas of outside resources you can incorporate to help build background knowledge.
With references to Finland, I also recommend you pair this activity with either my small book on Finland or your own resources. My blog: www.travelteachlove.com has blog posts on both Helsinki and Suomenlinna that are helpful.
