Students will explore the use of wind power in the design, construction and testing of mini car models. Cars will be powered by the moving air generated from a box fan, simulating the renewable energy harnessed from turbines or windmills. The objective is for students to design and build a fan-powered car that will travel the greatest distance. They are given an imaginary budget to purchase supplies and must work within the given time / material constraints.
The packet includes an introduction, a materials list, space for two prototypes, a table for data measurement and collection, and follow-up discussion questions. There is also a rubric included and a bulletin board card with NYS, Common Core, and Next Generation Science standards.
