Product Description
STEM Engineering Challenge: Are you ready for a fantastic STEM challenge? Here it is: Zip Lines!

*** Please note: This lesson is available in a combination package.

This challenge is the best one we have completed! We all loved it! Students will follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process for this challenge. The package contains step-by-step procedures for the teacher that are clearly marked with the Design Process steps. The accompanying lab sheets for students are also marked. I have also added a new feature to the lab experience. Each student will spend time sketching and planning their own individual idea for the design of the zip line passenger carrier and then write reasons his or her design is the best. This is followed by a discussion with other team members in which each student presents the idea and reasons. Each team then decides what the team design will be. The plan gives every student a voice in the final design.

Students will build their passenger carrier and then experiment with different types of line for the device and record data. This will determine the best ride for each team’s carrier. Finally, students will have the opportunity to try a re-design!

You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes: fishing line, plastic cord, string, 3 ounce cups, cardstock, ping pong balls, straws, metal washers, paper clips, tape, skewers or dowel sticks, scissors, hole punchers, calculators, and containers for student supplies.

The package specifically includes: cover, teacher overview, materials and preparation page, 4 pages of teacher directions, 1 page of information about Newton’s Laws of Motion, 2 pages of helpful hints, constraints list, price list for supplies (students use this), 3 pages of photographs, a 2 page lab sheet, sample answer sheets, a cost listing sheet, credits page, and a thank you page. The page count listed includes everything. NOTE: Pages have been added so that this can be used as a Santa Delivery Zip Line!

I had more students excited about this challenge than almost any other project we have tried. They loved it! My favorite comment I overheard was, “Man, we have to take some of this tape off and reduce the friction!”
