Product Description
STEM Engineering Challenge: It’s the Popcorn Challenge! It's all about using volume to determine the size of a container!

STEM Challenges are great activities to engage students in their learning. Kids love the hands-on experiences! EVEN BETTER- add literature to your STEM challenges!

*** Please note: This lesson is available in a combination package.

The activities found in this package were inspired by a little book by Tomie dePaola called "The Popcorn Book". Picture books can provide the perfect starting point for science investigations. Using the book is, of course, optional. This investigation can be completed without reading the book to your class or a similar book can be substituted.

This one day STEM challenge will have your students thinking about volume. After hearing the book read (or talking about volume) students will design and construct a container for a specific amount of popcorn. (You will need about two regular sized microwaveable bags of popcorn popped for this challenge.) Students will have a list of the Design “rules” and a set of supplies from which to build. The final design will test their understanding of volume and at the same time have them collaborating, designing, and constructing. In the end, each team will present their final container!

You will need materials in addition to this lesson guide! This includes: popped popcorn, storage bags, 8½ x 11 paper, scissors, tape, and staplers. You will have to supply each group with a popcorn sample of 10 pieces of popcorn and you will need almost 300 pieces counted out for the challenge. It only takes a few minutes to count the popcorn into a container! You may also need a copy of The Popcorn Book by Tomie dePaola (optional).

The lesson guide provides a materials list and then step-by-step procedures to follow to make this a great experience. A page of Helpful Hints gives ideas of specific things to think about while using this package. Two lab sheets are provided and a page of photos to guide the use of the package. A page of Extensions gives ideas of continuing the activity as a whole class or in your science/math centers. Also, some ideas are given to further use The Popcorn Book.

The package specifically contains: Cover, Teacher Background page, Materials and Preparation page, 2 pages of Step-by-Step Procedures, Extensions page, Helpful Hints page, 2 Lab sheets, Photo page, and Credits page.
