What educators are saying

I love doing balloon rockets with forces. My students enjoyed this activity and the resource was well developed.
This was a lot of fun to use in the classroom as we connected to our local balloon event. This was a tremendous time-saver and helped a veteran teacher in a new position.

Description

Kids love rockets! Anything that blasts off or explodes is what they request in a science activity! So, here is a perfect choice for a STEM project! Students will be using balloons to propel their rockets! Are you ready to blast off?

This challenge may be purchased as part of a money-saving bundle!

This STEM activity will have your students experimenting with ways to make a balloon travel along a vertical path successfully. They will be challenged to use supplies in the most efficient way and launch the balloon rocket as high as possible. Along the way, they will work collaboratively and make on-the-spot improvements in their designs.

★You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes balloons, index cards, string, masking tape, and straws.

The product specifically contains:

NEWTON'S THIRD LAW

The simplified version of the third law is: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This is the version most students might be familiar with. The easiest way to show this law is with a device called a Newton's Cradle.

So How Does This Apply to Balloon Rockets?

You can relate this to the balloon rockets with a simple explanation. What is the action? The balloon expelling air. What is the reaction? The rocket moving- hopefully on a vertical path.

This challenge works perfectly with other Balloon Challenges:

NGSS4-PS3-4
Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another. Examples of devices could include electric circuits that convert electrical energy into motion energy of a vehicle, light, or sound; and, a passive solar heater that converts light into heat. Examples of constraints could include the materials, cost, or time to design the device. Devices should be limited to those that convert motion energy to electric energy or use stored energy to cause motion or produce light or sound.
NGSS3-5-ETS1-3
Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
NGSS4-PS3-1
Use evidence to construct an explanation relating the speed of an object to the energy of that object. Assessment does not include quantitative measures of changes in the speed of an object or on any precise or quantitative definition of energy.
NGSS3-5-ETS1-1
Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
NGSS3-5-ETS1-2
Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
