This is a middle school STEM project where students will be challenged to analyze an already existing cereal box and then redesign it to decrease its surface area (amount of cardboard used) while keeping the same volume (amount of cereal it can hold). The project is broken down in to 6 parts, making it easier for students to manage their time.
The students will be able to:
-Explain what a carbon footprint is.
-Explain what an ecological footprint is.
-Take measurements of cereal boxes.
-Calculate the volume of a cereal box.
-Calculate the surface area of a cereal box.
-Redesign a cereal box to decrease surface area while retaining volume.
-Create an isometric (3D) drawing.
-Create a flat pattern (net) drawing.
-Construct their redesigned cereal box using poster board.
The product includes:
-Descriptions of teacher and student responsibilities for each part of the project.
-Teacher notes for easy planning.
-Student activity sheets.
