What are the challenges?

Building Boats

This STEM activity will have your students designing and building a boat! Using simple supplies you probably already have on hand, students choose which materials they wish to use. To make this even more challenging students have a materials spending budget and must stay within it while building their boat. Materials you will need in addition to this package include straws, masking tape, craft foam, aluminum foil, waxed paper, plastic wrap, cups, water containers, weight (like pennies), and lots of paper towels!

This package specifically contains: Cover Sheet, Background, Materials and Preparation page, 5 pages of Teacher’s Step-by-Step Procedures, Extension Page with ideas for more activities, 2 pages of Helpful Hints, 3 pages of photos, Constraints of the Task page, a pricing list for the budget feature, a cost sheet for students to use, 3 versions of a lab sheet- one with sample student answers, and a Credits page. Bridges with Marshmallows

This is a bridge building experience. Students will use toothpicks and marshmallows to construct a bridge. They will test the strength of their final designs by adding weights to the structures. The package includes step-by-step instructions with many hints along the way. One page gives you a materials list and advance preparation steps. Included is a page of possible ways to extend this activity beyond its basic one day use. A page of helpful hints will give you some useful ideas! A page of actual photos of student work is included! You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes toothpicks, marshmallows, paper plates or bowls, and weights (like pennies). The package specifically contains pages for Teacher background, materials and preparations, 2 pages of step by step procedures, extension ideas, 2 pages of helpful hints, 3 pages of photographs, and two versions of lab sheets with sample answers provided. Build a Tower with Index Cards

Students will be designing and constructing a tower made with two supplies. They will have to work together and revise constantly. Their initial thinking will be challenged as they see their efforts collapse (literally) and then they will go back to the drawing board. The lesson guide provides a materials list and then step-by-step procedures to follow to make this a great experience. A page of Helpful Hints gives ideas of specific things to think about while using this package. Two versions of lab sheets are provided (one with sample student answers). A page of photos will guide the use of the package. A page of Extensions gives ideas of continuing the activity as a whole class or in your science/math centers. Materials needed in addition to this package include index cards, masking tape, and scissors.
