Description

Here’s another great STEM challenge with Math and designing all in one package! This is a fantastic engineering design event in which students solve some math problems, gather materials based on their answers, and then build a structure! You will love the format of this resource!

Note: This challenge may be purchased as part of a money-saving bundle!

What is the challenge?
In this challenge, students will work together to solve eight math problems. Their answers will determine the quantity of each supply they will receive for building the structure. Students will be building a bridge, using the materials earned and following a constraints list. The eight task cards must be solved in a specified amount of time, so students will really have to work out a system for accomplishing this and for checking over the answers. This challenge promises some amazing collaboration as students work together to solve the problems and then to design and build the bridge.

This product contains a Reading passage with a data table that is about ten famous bridges. Students use the reading passage and data table in solving the eight math problems. The math problems are provided in two formats- either a set of eight task cards or a one-page sheet. Answer sheets for students to record their solutions and answer sheets for the teacher are also provided. You will also find three variations of the math problems at different ability levels- to adapt to your group as needed. Also, I have included a scoring rubric and editable forms.

You will have many decisions to make as your prepare this challenge:
• Reading selection and data table in color or black/white

• Math problems in two formats- worksheets or task cards (color or black/white)

• Math problems in three ability levels - easier, average, and more challenging (color or black/white)

• Materials cards for supply bins - in color or black/white

DON'T WORRY! I have three pages of detailed prep directions for you that will walk you through all of these decisions!

What is your prep?

You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes masking tape, straws in 2 sizes. craft Sticks, rubber bands, paper clips, cardboard pieces, card stock, and Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars (optional).

The package specifically includes:
