In this STEM challenge, kids can work individually or in teams of two or three to build a rocket. The challenge is to make their rocket fly the farthest when they add vinegar and baking soda together. This activity can take several class periods to complete. I recommend doing the following:
Take one period to brainstorm ideas for the rockets and create the designs.
Take two periods to build the rockets.
Take a period to complete the launches
Take a period to reflect on the successes and failures, then make a new plan.
You can connect this challenge to science concepts like force and motion, states of matter, and concepts of energy. Writing and math skills are incorporated into this STEM challenge as well. My students LOVE this activity, and I hope yours will too!
