STEM activities are amazing and your students will absolutely LOVE them! They foster hands-on collaborative learning. Students use questioning and critical thinking skills to help guide their own learning in these lessons! They get to build important character traits like collaboration, perseverance, cooperation, responsibility etc.
During STEM activities, students are given the opportunity to think critically about a problem and be creative in how to solve it! STEM activities are a great way to reinforce a growth mindset in ALL students. If plan A did not work, then go back to the drawing board and come up with plan B!
This bundle includes 3 STEM Challenges!!!
Challenge 1- Sink or Float
This STEM activity fosters student creativity through a challenge that requires them to build. It pairs well with many mentor texts, which are listed in the teacher instructions page.
In this STEM Activity, students work collaboratively to design a object that will float in water. Each group of students has a variety of materials available to use (you could also limit the materials they have, therefore promoting deeper critical thinking skills).
There are FIVE different recording sheets included in this product. The recording sheets offer differentiation of this activity by including different building requirements they must meet. This increases the level of difficulty of the challenge. Students use this planning sheet to brainstorm and draw their plan. They also document the materials they plan on using on the sheet. After creating their design and testing it, students take time to reflect. Students respond to various reflection questions on their worksheet.
Challenge 2- Paper Cup Tower
This STEM activity pairs well with teaching about cooperation and team work! The teacher instructions lists several mentor texts that would be great to use to introduce this STEM Challenge! In this STEM Activity, students work collaboratively build a tower of 10 cups without using their hands. Each group has different materials available that they can use to assist in building their tower.
There are THREE different recording sheets available that differentiate the level of difficulty for this challenge!
Challenge 3- Plant Protection
In this activity, students work together to create a shield/covering for their plants to protect them from getting eaten by animals. Creepy Carrots is an amazing mentor text that pairs well with this activity. This would be a great culminating task to teaching students about plants!
