Description
Perfect for spur of the moment, spontaneous STEM time! It's STEM Quick Challenges! Can you use a few supplies and build a structure? These challenges are quick, easy prep, easy materials, great fun, and can be used on the spur of the moment! This is a money-saving bundle of twenty Quick Challenges!
These challenges feature the task of using given supplies to design and build. Specific criteria for each task are given to students along with a box of supplies. Stand back and watch them construct! Students record their thinking on lab sheets or a folding graphic organizer- both of which can be used with your Science Interactive Notebooks.
What are the Challenges?
The Specific Quick Challenges can be purchased separately. Just click on the titles below:
- Design a Container Students build a hinging container that has a fastener to hold it closed.
- Pom-Pom Blasters Students build a device that will propel pom-poms. The catapult can propel any soft object- candy, pom-poms, marshmallows, cotton balls.
- Spoon Tower Students build a tower with the constraint of having a plastic spoon atop the building. You can opt to have students build a realistic tower (like the Statue of Liberty) or just a tower holding a spoon aloft.
- Robot Man Students use materials to build a model of a robot that has a specific and realistic purpose of their choice.
- Parachutes Students use materials to build a parachute that will safely land a toy figure.
- Robotic Hand Students use the materials to build a movable model of a robotic hand. This challenge includes three different ways to complete the hand.
- Straw Maze Students use materials to make a maze of straws through which a marble can roll. Materials for the base can be cardboard or foam board.
- Halloween Spider Cages Students use materials to build a spider cage for 10 plastic spiders. They must also satisfy a few more rules to keep those spiders happy!
- Shark Traps Students use materials to make a shark trap that will capture a shark safely. The resource does list tips for making sure students are creating a safe way to transport the shark.
- Volcanoes Students use materials to build a volcano model and test it with a chemical reaction. The added feature of this challenge is creating the best "lava flow" which will depend on how the chemical container is built.
- Platform Towers In this challenge there are six teams. Each team begins with a bin of materials and a set of task cards. Every team completes task 1 with a 4-5 minute time limit. Then they rotate! That’s right, they all move to the next table. Then every team completes task 2 on the structure that was started by a different team. After 4-5 minutes, they rotate again. Every team completes task 3 on the structure that has now had two different teams working on it. This continues through 6 rotations.
- Ski Lift Chairs In this challenge students work in two smaller teams to create a ski lift chair and a skier. The two are combined and added to a lift line that will move them to the top of your "mountain". Creation of the movable line is optional.
- Toy Sleigh Zip Line In this challenge students design a sleigh that will hold toys and travel successfully down a zip line. You will need to set up a zip line- we just used a long piece of fishing line.
- Animal Adaptations In this challenge students will design a 3-D model of an animal and its adaptations.
- Treasure Boxes In this challenge students will build a treasure box modeled after a pirate's treasure chest. A book suggestion is included.
- Paper Plate Mazes In this challenge students design the paths for the maze using a paper plate as the base. They also add barriers and bumpers to make the design interesting. So much fun!
- Build a Raft In this challenge students use two main materials to build a raft. After testing it in water they must improve the model to float longer while holding weight!
- Bottle Flipping In this challenge students flip four bottles and keep data tables of the results. After completing the experiment, students will use their data to design their own experiment with unusual materials in the bottles! So fun!
- Dream House Floor Plan In this challenge students use grid paper and some specific directions to design the floor plan of their dream house. They must complete a chart listing the area of every room in the house, determine the total area of the house, and then calculate the cost of the home.
- Candy Cane Mystery Build In this challenge students use a budget to purchase materials to build one of 6 structures. Six challenge cards are included and students receive their "mystery" item randomly. The trick is they must use a candy cane as a functional part of the structure.
Each package specifically contains:
- cover sheet
- teacher Background
- 2-5 pages of teacher directions
- set of Criteria cards for students (with and without background color)
- lab Sheet
- 1-3 pages of Photos
- scoring Rubric
- Terms of Use page.
And, best of all, the forms are editable! Just talk about the criteria of the task, give students their supply boxes, and let them get busy planning, designing, collaborating, and learning!
Note: Each of these challenges may be purchased separately. Just click on the titles within this product description!
