Teachers Are Terrific

This amazing STEM activity will have your students designing a food delivery company, including packaging the product, creating company logos and slogans, testing the product, and creating a commercial to perform. The steps of the Engineering Design Process are followed as students create a Baked Potato Delivery Company.

The specific lessons in the activity include:

  • In the Ask step students will be introduced to the task, brainstorm about how businesses work, brainstorm about the use of logos and slogans, and examine advertisements to determine effective practices.
  • In the Imagine step students will decide on their company name, logo, and slogan. They will also divide their group into smaller divisions to distribute the work of this experience.
  • In the Plan and Create steps students will be in smaller groups. One group will be working on advertising posters. One group will be working on the packaging of the product. Another group will be designing the inside of the product container and then testing their invention. This includes cooking a baked potato and testing it for maintaining its temperature and not splitting open when dropped.
  • Finally in the Concluding step students will present their work to the entire class.

Vocabulary pages (18 words) used throughout the study are included in the form of 2 sheets that can be added to student folders. A word wall set has a strip with the word and a second strip with the meaning. A full-color word wall set is provided and a black/white set.
