Description

Are you looking for a STEM prototype activity? This is THE ONE! It’s an Egg Drop Task that involves creating a model of an amusement park ride! Your students will love this STEM Challenge. They will solve multiple problems as they create an amusement park ride model that keeps passengers safe!

Note: This challenge is available in a money-saving bundle!

What is the challenge?

  • It’s the ultimate challenge! Can you protect a fragile egg?
  • This STEM challenge will have your students working as Amusement Park Engineers.
  • Their task is to design and build a model of an amusement park ride. They will test the ride in several ways before presenting the final version to the whole class!
  • In the presentation, students will have the additional challenge of using a real egg with their ride model.
  • Can they make a braking system? Will the ride protect its passengers? Will the egg withstand the fall?

What is your prep?

  • The Teacher's guide will walk you through this activity step-by-step. I have thought of everything and included tips from use in my classroom.
  • As a STEM Specialist, I will lead you through making this a successful event for your student.
  • Supplies needed in addition to this package include broomsticks or PVC pipe, paper or foam cups, binder clips, straws, ping pong balls, pennies – to use as weights, zip lock bags, eggs, card stock, and regular copy paper, masking tape, and string. Of course, substitutions can be made for any of these!
  • The teacher's guide describes the materials and offers alternatives.

The package specifically contains:

NGSS4-PS3-4
Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another. Examples of devices could include electric circuits that convert electrical energy into motion energy of a vehicle, light, or sound; and, a passive solar heater that converts light into heat. Examples of constraints could include the materials, cost, or time to design the device. Devices should be limited to those that convert motion energy to electric energy or use stored energy to cause motion or produce light or sound.
NGSS3-5-ETS1-3
Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
NGSS4-PS3-1
Use evidence to construct an explanation relating the speed of an object to the energy of that object. Assessment does not include quantitative measures of changes in the speed of an object or on any precise or quantitative definition of energy.
NGSS3-5-ETS1-1
Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
NGSS3-5-ETS1-2
Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
