What is the challenge?

This STEM activity will have your students working to design and build a parachute that will safely land fragile cargo. Not only will they need to make the parachute, they will also create a container in which to store the cargo. The cargo, of course, is an egg! Can they create the best parachute canopy? Will their egg container protect the egg? Will the devices all land safely?

What is your prep?

In addition to this package, you will need items for making parachutes and egg containers. Suggested items include: packing peanuts, cotton balls, bubble wrap, copy paper, straws, masking tape, foil, card stock paper, paper clips, cups (foam, plastic, paper), cardboard tubes, pipe cleaners, tissue paper, craft sticks, clay or play dough, newspaper, shopping bags, coffee filters, and string. Any of these items can be changed as needed. Many suggestions are included about the materials!

TIME FRAME: This activity will take more than more class session. Expect one class session to be the creation of the parachute and container and a second session will be testing, improving, and the ultimate drop with an egg. Depending on your students, it might also take a third class session.
