Description

Can you place containers in order by volume? This one day challenge will help your students visualize and understand volume as they compare sizes of containers and their volume.

Please note: This challenge is available in money-saving bundles.

What is the challenge?

Students will examine seven different containers with volumes they cannot easily distinguish by merely looking at them. They will try to order the containers from least volume to greatest volume - using only observation. After attempting this, students complete two more activities to try ordering the containers- each time adding a new way to measure. Finally, they will participate in a discussion of the results and talk about how their perceptions of the containers and the actual volume of the containers compare.

You will need materials in addition to this lesson guide! This includes seven different sizes and shapes of containers (common items like plastic cups, standing test tubes, round pans, etc.); rice (or similar item to use with measuring); scoops (a 3-ounce cup works); and dishpans or trays.

The lesson guide provides:

• Materials list
• Step-by-step procedures
• Helpful Hints gives ideas of specific things to make this easier and fun
• Page of Extensions gives ideas of continuing the activity as a whole class or in your science/math centers
• Lab sheet with sample answers
• Class data table page
• constraints page
• Scoring rubric
• Editable forms!
