Here’s a great math problem! Is a scoop of rice the same volume as a scoop of popcorn? It’s all about exploring with volume! STEM Challenges are easy and terrific ways to engage students in science and math concepts and have some fun, too! This exploration into volume will provide excellent hands-on learning!

Please note: This challenge is available in money-saving bundles.

What is the challenge?

This one-day challenge explores the meaning of volume. Students will examine various materials and consider how many scoops of those materials will fill a container. They will add scoops to containers and keep a data table of the results. Finally, students will discuss those results and reach a conclusion about the scoop and container- learning some valuable concepts about volume along the way! You may just have some 'aha' moments in your classroom. You can also extend this challenge by having your students design an extension of the experiment and try some new materials or different sizes of scoops.

What is your prep?

You will need materials in addition to this lesson guide! This includes: cups to use as containers and scoops, seven different materials to test (Examples: rice, beans, sand, gravel, beads, birdseed, un-popped popcorn), and dish pans or trays. These are all items you may already have in your classroom!

The lesson guide provides:

  • Materials list
  • Step-by-step procedures to follow to make this a successful experience for you.
  • Full page listing of ways to set up the materials stations
  • Helpful Hints will provide some troubleshooting
  • A page of Extensions will give you ideas of continuing the activity as a whole class or in your science/math centers
  • Lab sheet
  • Scoring rubric
  • Photos

The package specifically contains Cover, Teacher Background page, Materials and Preparation page, 4 pages of Step-by-Step Procedures, Extensions page, a lab sheet with sample answers, 2 pages of Station labels, Photo pages, a scoring rubric, and a class data table. There is more! All the forms in this challenge are provided in an editable format!
