Description

Here’s another fantastic real-life STEM challenge featuring a Hammock! This one is just pure fun (and challenging!) Students must build a model of a hammock. There are two versions of this challenge provided. Both are challenging and full of problem-solving!

Note: This challenge is available in money-saving bundles!

What is the challenge?

This challenge is to build a model of a hammock. When we started this project students were familiar with hammocks and could talk about what they looked like and were used for. What we discovered is that attaching strings to the hammock bed and then to the connecting posts was a challenge!

With both versions of this project, students will have restricted supplies and task constraints that will make them think! Teams will devise a building plan and retrieve supplies based on that plan. You have the option of allowing or not allowing students to revisit the materials after they begin building. This will lead to some very clever use of the materials and great problem-solving! (You can, of course, relax these constraints for your students!)

What is your prep?

You will need supplies in addition to this package.

  • For Version 1 this includes: Fabric scraps, Felt pieces, Craft Foam, Newspaper, Heavyweight paper (like a brown sack), Rubber Bands, Straws, String, Tape, Scissors, Digital Scale (optional as weights can be counted) and Weights (like pennies or washers).
  • For Version 2 you need the same materials except for the scale and weights.

So, what is the difference between the two versions?

  • In Version 1 students use the materials to create the hammock bed and then attach it to poles of your choice. We used our lab stools. This gave us the opportunity to test the strength of the hammocks by adding weights to the beds. It also meant I had to define the rules about how the hammock could be attached. These hammocks rarely failed and held a lot of weight.
  • In Version 2 students use the materials to create the hammock bed and they must also create the end poles for hanging the hammock. We used cardboard tubes (paper towel tubes). This version had students problem-solving very differently from the first version. We had to learn to make the cardboard tubes stand up and students had to find a way to hang the hammock from those tubes.

The package specifically includes:

  • 6 pages of teacher directions
