Anxious to try a STEM challenge but worried about time? Fun activity for Pi Day?

This editable activity is a STEM challenge, but your students will use area and circumference of circles; and surface area and volume of cylinders! Students have to build a landing pool for a daredevil who is diving off of a tall platform (a pencil eraser off of a ruler). With this activity, you’ll be able to “focus on the M in STEM”!

Resource includes:
✍Worksheet reviewing area and circumference of a circle
✍Worksheet for use prior to the STEM challenge to build understanding of surface area of a cylinder. ✍Recording pages for attempts during the STEM challenge
✍Extension activities for after the STEM challenge such as finding the actual size of the pool, volume and more.
✍Link to a Google Sheets spreadsheet that is set up to graph the successful and failed attempts in your classes.
✍Poster of the engineering design process (color and black/white)
✍Letter to send home asking for supply donations.

Note: Answer keys have been provided when possible. When answer keys are not possible, a second Google Sheets spreadsheet is included to make it easier to check student’s work with varying answers. Multiple versions of some worksheets are provided to allow for differentiation. (Alternate version allow you to choose your own scale; other versions provide formulas to provide scaffolding).

You will receive both a pdf and a Powerpoint if you purchase this product, The Powerpoint file leaves all questions editable so you can change them to suit the needs of your class! You will need access to PowerPoint if you need to edit the questions. The pdf is just for printing. (Note: Only the questions are editable. All backgrounds including titles and borders are not editable).
