Anxious to try a STEM challenge but worried about time? Fun activity for Pi Day?
This activity is a STEM challenge, but your students will use area and circumference of circles; and surface area and volume of cylinders! Students have to build a landing pool for a daredevil who is diving off of a tall platform (a pencil eraser off of a ruler). With this activity, you’ll be able to “focus on the M in STEM”!
This resource includes a worksheet for students to complete prior to the STEM challenge to help them understand how to find the surface area of a cylinder. There is also pages for students to complete to record their attempts during the STEM challenge. Finally there are several activities that can be completed after the STEM challenge as students find the actual size of the pool, volume and more.
There is also a link to a Google Sheets spreadsheet that is set up to graph the successful and failed attempts in your classes.
Resource also includes a poster of the engineering design process (color and black/white) as well as a letter to send home asking for supply donations.
Note: Answer keys have been provided when possible. When answer keys are not possible, a second Google Sheets spreadsheet is included to make it easier to check student’s work with varying answers. Multiple versions of some worksheets are provided to allow for differentiation. (Alternate version allow you to choose your own scale; other versions provide formulas to provide scaffolding).
