This is great way to promote both the scientific and engineering methods! This is a 'feel good' project. You will experience students thinking about what they can do to help people throughout the world! - THIS IS WHAT TEACHING SCIENCE IS ALL ABOUT!!!
Your students are given a one page article concerning eruptions of volcanoes and how engineers have tried to divert lava from towns. In addition to the article, your students are provided with several recommended websites that feature volcanoes that have erupted in the past. The websites will introduce different ideas that have been accomplished and on what may be done. Your students are then provided their challenge.
