Description

Are you ready for a fabulous STEM Tower Challenge that has a fun little twist? The kids loved it! It’s a satellite dish tower! Teams work in mini-teams of two to design part of the tower and then join their parts together.

Note: This challenge is available in money-saving bundles!

What is the challenge?

  • This challenge is to build a tower that will hold a satellite dish aloft.
  • The tower does not need to be a specific height but must hold the dish aloft and the satellite dish must resemble one.
  • Also, the satellite dish must rotate in some way in order to be moved to receive a “signal”.
  • Here’s the twist: Each group will be divided into two parts. One part will receive the supplies for the satellite dish and build it while the other part will receive the supplies for the tower and build it.
  • At some point, the two teams within the group will have to work together to assemble the entire structure.
  • It’s an amazing feat of collaboration!

What is your prep?

Supplies needed in addition to this package include Cups - plastic or foam, plastic lids for the cup or similar round flat objects, flat foam trays or bowls, rubber bands, pipe cleaners, masking tape, straws, and craft sticks.

The package specifically contains:

  • Cover sheet
  • Teacher Background
  • 1-page Materials and Prep list
  • 5 pages of Teacher directions with helpful hints
  • Set of Criteria cards for students
  • 2 full pages of the task constraints
  • Lab Sheet in two versions
  • 4 pages of Tower Photos with more details
  • Scoring rubric
  • All forms are editable

I know you will love this challenge purely for the collaboration and teamwork your groups will display. We had such fun results!

This tower package works perfectly with two more that involve holding something aloft:

You can purchase all three tower challenges in money-saving bundles!
