STEM activities are amazing! They foster hands-on collaborative learning. Students are at the center of these lessons! They get to build important character traits like collaboration, perseverance, cooperation, responsibility etc.
During STEM activities, students are given the opportunity to think critically about a problem and be creative in how to solve it! STEM activities are a great way to reinforce a growth mindset in ALL students. If plan A did not work, then go back to the drawing board and come up with plan B!
This STEM activity fosters student creativity through a challenge that requires them to build. It pairs well with many mentor texts, which are listed in the teacher instructions page.
In this STEM Activity, students work collaboratively to design a object that will float in water. Each group of students has a variety of materials available to use (you could also limit the materials they have, therefore promoting deeper critical thinking skills).
There are FIVE different recording sheets included in this product. The recording sheets offer differentiation of this activity by including different building requirements they must meet. This increases the level of difficulty of the challenge. Students use this planning sheet to brainstorm and draw their plan. They also document the materials they plan on using on the sheet. After creating their design and testing it, students take time to reflect. Students respond to various reflection questions on their worksheet.
