Wind Power Car Building STEM Challenge
This assignment is geared toward Fifth Grade but can be easily modified for 4th/3rd. It could also be used as a STEM intro for sixth grade.
Can easily be extended to be two class periods/2 days long
Power point that can upload to Google Sheets
*STEM challenge directions - 3 slides
*Background knowledge on wind power
*ARE - "ARE" method review (for defending a design/argument)
Main supplies needed - 3 cardboard paper towel rolls, 2 skewers, 6 straws, 6 toothpicks, 5 legos (or something similar), Duct tape, 1 empty water bottle, Ruler to measure (not to use as a building material), 1 scissor (not to use as a building material), Teacher will supply fan
Encourages small group work, defense of a design method, working with constraints, engineering an aerodynamic movable vehicle, trial/error, building creatively to meet standards.
Directly tied to NGSS and their framework such as *Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering), *Developing and using models, *Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering), *Engaging in argument from evidence, *Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
