Description

It’s time for a STEM Challenge for the windy month of March! This STEM Activity is great fun during a windy month, but can certainly be used all year! Your students will love building and testing these boats and then it's off to the races!

NOTE: This challenge may be purchased as part of money-saving bundles!

What is the challenge?

  • Students use materials to design a boat that will sail successfully because of the sail they create.
  • The challenge is all about the sail because the body of the boat is made from an unsinkable material!
  • Students will experiment with different geometric shapes and sizes and test to see which works best.
  • They may also experiment with using non-geometric shapes and test those.
  • Finally, they use the experiment data to design and build a sail for their ultimate wind-powered boat!

What is your prep?

You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes cardboard tubes, pool noodles, craft sticks, wooden skewers, craft foam sheets, straws, masking tape, long pan for water, fan, and paper towels.

The package specifically includes:

  • Materials and preparation page
  • 6 pages of teacher directions
  • Constraints list
