    Bundle Description
Are you ready for some fun real-life STEM challenges that students love? This bundle has six that we created and explored and tested just for you! Its Building Hammocks, Sailboats, Suspension Bridges, Cargo Drops, Cranking Devices, and Crossing a Chasm!

Students will follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process for each challenge. The packages contain step-by-step procedures for the teacher that are clearly marked with the Design Process steps. The accompanying lab sheets for students are also marked. Each challenge includes photos, helpful hints, sample students answers with lab sheets, and scoring rubrics. Best of all, all forms are included in an editable format!

Note: This package contains six challenges. Each may be purchased separately and in bundles of three. Check the 3-packs below before you purchase!

Some specifics about each design challenge:

    Cargo Drops
Students will learn some background information about cargo or air drops and then design a container for cargo and experiment with dropping the container from different heights. A great feature for this challenge is a step in which each student will spend time sketching and planning their own individual idea for the design and then write reasons his or her design is the best. This is followed by a discussion with other team members in which each student presents the idea and reasons. Each team then decides what the team design will be. The plan gives every student a voice in the final design. Students will build the container for the fragile cargo, test it, revise it, and test again until the model works at the greatest height. After presenting the models students will have the opportunity to try a re-design! Materials you will need in addition to this package include: cardboard pieces, 3 ounce cups, index cards, large marshmallows, rubber bands, straws, craft sticks, bubble wrap, masking tape, scissors, and hole punchers

    Crossing a Chasm
Students will be trying to build a device that will transport an object across a chasm. The scenario includes hiking and having a swinging bridge collapse making it necessary to transport some items across the ravine or chasm. The materials available for the rescue are only the items they might have had in their backpacks on the pretend hike. Finally, to make this really tricky, students have to make the device powered by the wind! Your class may have a lively discussion about why wind power would be necessary! Materials needed include: paper clips, pipe cleaners, copy paper, card stock, small cups, rubber bands, aluminum foil, ping pong balls, string or fishing line, fan, stopwatch, and plastic boxes (optional).

    Design a Cranking Device
Students will be rescuing a teammate that has fallen over a cliff. The scenario is that the students must use what they have in their hiking backpacks and what can be found in nature to build a device to wind up the fallen person. There are some strict constraints with this task! The pretend items used from nature are heavy and must be used in specific ways in order for them to work. Students use smaller models of the items- like a dowel stick for a tree branch or paper clips for carabiners! Can they make a cranking device with a handle that will successfully rescue the fallen person? What happens if the rope they have is too short? Can they create a way to make the rope longer? You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes: Dowel Sticks, empty tape spools, paper clips, masking tape, string, small cups, straws, craft sticks, object to represent the fallen person (like Lego men or ping pong balls), scissors, desk or platform to represent the cliff side.

    Design a Suspension Bridge
Students are designing and building a suspension bridge. They will need to learn a little about how suspension bridges work before beginning and then see if their final model is, indeed, a true suspension bridge. This challenge should take three class sessions. This may include the time you need to take to have students research suspension bridges or look at materials you gather to help them understand how a suspension bridge works. Materials you will need in addition to this package include craft sticks, hot glue guns and glue sticks, string, tape, and cardboard.

    Design a Sail Boat
Students are designing and building a boat using only a few supplies. The real trick is that the boat must sail when the wind is added. Finally, the boat will be tested for its ability to hold weight. Throughout the challenge, students will test for floating ability, then sailing, and then holding weight. They will also modify whenever they find their boats taking on water! It’s a very competitive activity, but filled with collaborative opportunities and creative designing. You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes aluminum foil, copy paper, straws, craft sticks, tape, water containers, towels, and a fan.

    Build a Hammock
Students will have restricted supplies that are not replenished and task constraints that will make them think! Teams will devise a building plan and retrieve supplies based on that plan. They are not allowed to re-visit the supplies. This will lead to some very clever use of the materials and great problem-solving! (You can, of course, relax these constraints for your students!) You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes: Fabric scraps, Felt pieces, Craft Foam, Newspaper, Heavyweight paper (like a brown sack), Rubber Bands, Straws, String, Tape, Scissors, Digital Scale (optional as weights can be counted) and Weights (like pennies or washers).

For each package you will receive: Cover, Teacher Background, Materials and Preparation page, pages of Teacher Step-by-Step Directions, pages of Helpful Hints, pages of photos, the listing of task constraints to display, lab sheets specific to each task, sample answers, a scoring rubric, and a Terms of Use page. Also each challenge includes a scoring rubric and a file containing all forms in an editable format.

Check the individual listing for each package for more information.
