Bundle Description

What a great little bundle this is for you! It is a combination of three fabulous natural events that kids have a fascination with- earthquakes, flooding, and volcanoes!

Note: These three challenges may be purchased separately and in other money-saving bundles!

These three challenges all deal with a naturally occurring land form event, but don’t worry! The challenges are presented in kid-friendly ways that your students will love. Take a look at the details below:

STEM Challenge Earthquake Resistant Building

In this challenge, students will be using materials to design a three-story structure that can withstand being shaken in a mild earthquake simulation. The “earth” pan you provide for the simulation uses an easy supply- gelatin - or you can construct a shake tray following the simple instructions included in the resource package. Just prepare the shake tray and then let students add their structures to it. The structures are built using only three materials, must be at least three floors tall, resemble a building (not a tower), and be stable enough to keep standing. Will the buildings survive the mild earthquake?

The package specifically includes the cover, teacher background, materials and preparation page, 5 pages of teacher directions for the gelatin version, a constraints list, 4 pages of photographs, two extra Hints page, student lab sheet with sample answers, a scoring rubric, and the Terms of Use page. All forms are provided in an editable format. ★The NEW PAGES include: teacher directions for a plastic bin shake tray, three pages of photos and lists for alternative materials, and some final ideas and hints.

STEM Challenge Flood Barrier

This challenge is to experiment with absorbent materials to try to find the one that absorbs the most water. Then students are challenged to use available items to build a barrier that will slow or stop the flow of water. One of the building items can be the absorbent material the team found to be the best. The rest of the materials are just things you gather that they can use to build a barrier. The barrier is built inside a pan and when the team is ready you will pour two cups of water into the pan to see if the barrier works. The tricky part to this challenge is that the house is made of paper! So, the barrier better work! The scenario we used for this challenge was to build a barrier to protect a doghouse! In addition to the experiment and building of the barrier, students will also work with a budget feature for the task. The building items will be priced and students will choose these while staying within a given budget. The cost sheet we used is provided, as well as an editable cost sheet in case you need to change the building items and/or prices.

★Materials you will need in addition to this package include: 5-6 different items to test for absorbency (like cotton balls and sponges), Styrofoam cups, Graduated cylinders, Dishpans or aluminum trays, Stopwatches, Craft sticks, Straws, Paper clips, Rubber bands, and Masking tape. Optional building materials include sand, modeling dough, or clay.

This package specifically contains: Cover page, Teacher Background page, Table of Contents, Materials and Preparation page, 3 pages of Teacher Directions applicable to the experiment portion of the task, 3 pages of Teacher Directions for the building portion of the task, Student lab sheets, Cost sheet for the building portion (students follow a budget), an editable cost sheet, 4 pages of helpful hints, 5 pages of Photos, a scoring rubric, and a Terms of Use page. All forms are provided in an editable file. The teacher direction pages include photos and samples of student work.

STEM Quick Challenge Volcanoes

This is a QUICK CHALLENGE which means detailed instructions are not included. Simple teacher procedures are included. Just talk about the Criteria of the task, and let them get busy planning, designing, collaborating, and learning! This includes a Budget Feature! Students will have a budget and you can opt to use pretend money for them to purchase materials. This adds to the challenge of this activity!

Supplies needed in addition to this package include cardboard tubes – toilet tissue size, small cup or container 1 to 3 ounces, construction paper, masking tape, foil, tissue paper, vinegar, baking soda, measuring spoons, sturdy paper plates, baskets or bins for “shopping carts”, and fake money (optional).

The package specifically contains: Cover sheet, Teacher Background, 4 pages of Teacher Directions, Set of Criteria cards for students, Student Shopping List, Lab Sheet, 3 pages of Photos, a scoring rubric, and a Terms of Use page. And all forms are provided in an editable format!
