    Description

Get ready for some amazing challenges that all explore using a model of a real-life construction design. Students love these challenges and they are jam-packed with learning opportunities.

Note: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately. Just click on the titles!

Students will follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process for each challenge. The packages contain step-by-step procedures for the teacher that are clearly marked with the Design Process steps. The accompanying lab sheets for students are also marked. A new feature has been added in two of the challenges in which each student will spend time sketching and planning their own individual idea for the design and then write reasons his or her design is the best. This is followed by a discussion with other team members in which each student presents the idea and reasons. Each team then decides what the team design will be. The plan gives every student a voice in the final design. (Zip Lines and Gliding Bridges has the feature.)

    What are the challenges?

In Build a Pipeline Prototype students will build a pipeline model after learning a little about where and how pipelines are used. You can opt to have students complete research into a specific country’s use of water pipelines and how they are constructed before having them try building one themselves. You can also opt to complete the challenge without extra research.

In Build a Zip Line your students will build their passenger carriers and then experiment with different types of line for the device and record data to make decisions. This will determine the best ride for each team’s carrier. Finally, students will have the opportunity to try a re-design! Students will also keep a cost sheet for the activity. This challenge also contains a bonus challenge in which students create a zip line for Santa!

In Build a Gliding Bridge your students will build the passenger carrier and a bridge system that includes a moving string and end supports after learning about the wire bridges of Nepal. They will determine the best ride for each team’s carrier. Finally, students will have the opportunity to try a re-design! Students will also keep a cost sheet for the activity.

BONUS! Each of these challenges contains a scoring rubric and an editable file. All forms in the challenges (lab sheets, constraints pages, and rubrics) can be edited!

You will need additional materials for these challenges.
