Are you ready for a STEM Challenge with super easy materials that all also really full of learning and fun? How about the main supply being straws? This bundle of three challenges is a money-saver and has some of our very favorite building tasks.

What are the challenges?
This challenge is to create the ultimate hoop flyer. Students will experiment with changing the variables of a standard hoop flyer and then choose which components to use in the ultimate design. Students will be challenged to consider which variables to include in the final ultimate hoop flyer. Will they choose everything or only the best possibilities? After testing as many variations of the original plane as time allows students use their recorded data to make decisions on a design. They will have a chance to improve the model they eventually build and learn from their mistakes!
You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes straws, paper, tape, scissors, and rulers. Two sizes of straws are needed and many types of paper (cardstock, copy paper, construction paper).
This challenge is to build that will hold weight. There are some other rules for this and some ways you can vary the task. Students have the goal of suspending a “bucket” within the tower and that bucket must hold weight. The main supply for the tower is straws. Students will be challenged to find a way to use the straws to hold the bucket as it gets heavier and heavier when weights are added. They will make on-the-spot adjustments as they see weak points of the tower buckle or collapse. It’s engineering at its best!
You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes straws, string, masking tape, hole punchers, small cups, and scissors.
This challenge is to build a geodesic dome! Students will use only two materials for the dome! Straws and pipe cleaners! The challenge involves some research prior to beginning and some discussion of geometric shapes. Students will be challenged to find a way to use the two materials to make a three-dimensional shape that will piece together and keep its shape.
