Explore literature with this STEM activity in which students combine their knowledge of a novel character with what they know about mechanics and building structures. Students are challenged to create a statue prototype that has at least one moving part. Then they must create a stand to support their statue. Using easily available materials, students in grades 1-6 will be guided through the engineering design process while working in collaborative groups. Teachers are provided with a complete packet that includes student worksheets, teacher notes, a rubric for assessment and a design brief poster. Team skills of problem solving, planning, perseverance, patience and presentation are stressed. This is a fun stand-alone culminating activity for younger students or it can be integrated into a larger writing project for older students.
