Why Classic Literature and Engineering?
Literature is an integral part of the elementary school curriculum.
Great literature has the potential to present situations that can challenge students’ imaginations. Stories can serve to encourage students to begin to problem solve, generate design proposals, and make connections to engineering. Literature is an area of the curriculum that all elementary teachers are familiar with and the engineering design process can be integrated into the lesson without it being an “add-on” to an already crowded curriculum. Fairy tales are already filled with “out of the box” thinking and can capture student’s attention by a simple “what if….” engineering question. Cinderella’s New House addresses pulleys, structures, and measurement within a well loved fantasy world.
