    Description

More and more I am asked for STEM challenges that can be put together quickly with easy materials. For this reason, these challenges were born- all easy prep and easy materials. The challenges in this bundle of six all feature easy to gather materials!

Please note: This package contains six challenges. Each may be purchased separately. These challenges can also be purchased in bundles of three.

    What are the challenges?

    Suspended Cups Tower

Students will design and build a tower that has some specific rules about two items- cups! The cups have constraints about their height and how close they can be to one another. One of the main building materials is straws and there are a few other items. This challenge is purely a problem solving one with no particular scenario for the construction task. It’s just a fun one! This would make a perfect challenge for STEM Friday, a reward for your class, an administrator visit to your classroom, or a task to be left with a sub! You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes Straws, Card stock paper, Foil, String, Pipe cleaners, Styrofoam cups, and Masking tape.

    Simple Egg Drop

Students will use straws, tape, some cushioning materials, and some creative thinking to make a very simple egg drop device. This will not be a drop made from a high place, but only from a 3-foot height. Students will still have to be very clever in the design since the egg cannot pop out or hit the floor too hard. We want those eggs to survive even if it is a little fall. This is a great little variation of an egg drop that can be completed in one class session! You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes Straws, Plastic eggs (optional), Weights, Masking tape, Tissue paper, Eggs, and Bubble wrap.

    Bridges with Straws

Students will have images of four kinds of bridges, a bunch of straws, some tape, and the challenge of building the bridge and being creative in using the one material they have! Can it be done? Of course, kids will be superb in their designs, their creative use of the straws, and the extras they add to their structures. You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes Straws, Masking tape, String, Small containers, and Pennies (or weights).

Some specifics about the Same Supplies Two Tasks Challenges:

Get ready for the ultimate in collaboration! In each of these challenges, one of two tasks will be assigned to different groups with each task using the same supplies. Each group follows the rules of its own task and works with its partner group because in the end the two tasks are joined together!

    Bridges and Towers

Students will be designing and creating towers or bridges using the same supplies. Each task has its own requirements. A bridge group will be partnered with a tower group and they must communicate as they design and build because in the end the tower will be placed on the bridge. Can the bridge group build a bridge with enough support for the tower? Can the tower group build a tower with a strong enough base? Can they successfully discuss their designs and make improvements so the two structures work together? Materials needed: modeling dough, rubber bands, craft sticks, straws, card stock paper, and masking tape.

    Launchers and Targets

Students will be designing and creating either a launching device or a target using the same supplies. Each task has its own requirements. A launching device group will be partnered with a target group and they must communicate as they design and build. When both groups are finished they will try the launcher by firing at the target. Can the launcher group design a device that will propel the soft object at the right angle? Can the target group create a structure that will withstand being hit? Can the two groups really have a partnership and work together? Materials needed: cardboard tubes, Styrofoam cups, rubber bands, craft sticks, straws, plastic spoons, masking tape, and mini marshmallows.

    Rescue Devices

Students will be designing and creating either a rescue cranking device or a rescue carrier using the same supplies. Each task has its own requirements. The rescue cranking device group will be partnered with a carrier group to combine the two structures into a rescue method to retrieve cargo from the bottom of a “cliff”. Can the crank team make a device that will wind up the rope (string)? Can the carrier group create a container that will not dump out the cargo? Can the two teams work together and carry out the rescue? Materials needed: straws, craft sticks, string, rubber bands, construction paper, and tape. The weights we used for the cargo were mini marshmallows.

For each of the six challenges, you will receive Cover, Teacher Background, Materials and Preparation page, 2-3 pages of Teacher Step-by-Step Directions, 1-2 pages of Helpful Hints, 3-4 pages of photos, alisting of task constraints to display, lab sheets specific to each task, sample answers of one set of lab sheets, a scoring rubric, and a Terms of Use page. The page count listed includes everything. In addition, each challenge has a scoring rubric and a file with forms in an editable format.

This set is a combination of six STEM Challenges. If you prefer they may be purchased separately:
