This file includes three activities that can be used to teach, review and assess students’ understanding of interspecific relationships in an ecosystem. A guide and answer key for each activity is included to assist in implementation.
Students will develop their own set of relationships. This is a chance for students to be creative. They can make up organisms and give them abilities and survival needs that will match the other organism. If students prefer, they can do research on real organisms to complete the relationship cards.
Illustrated Vocabulary Mini-Poster Challenge
Students are challenged to create four mini-posters to explain the meaning of each form of interspecific relationship. These mini-posters should include a definition of the terms (mutualism, commensalism, parasitism, and predation) as well as an illustration that shows the meaning of each term. Included with the student worksheet are “ribbons” that can be awarded based on creativity, neatness, accuracy, and completeness.
Cootie Catcher Foldable
Two versions of the cootie catcher are included. The first version allows students to create their own questions (and answers) for their cootie catcher. The second version could be used for review as it has examples of interspecific relationships already added to the foldable.
Students will create a matchbook with the different types of relationships inside. Students can record a definition in their own words and list examples of that type of relationship.
Relationships Flow Chart
Students can use the “ready-made” flow chart as a reference when they are trying to classify types of relationships. Students can also construct their own flow charts in their interactive science notebooks.
