This STEM activity incorporates the fun of the holidays and sense of community by helping students design and create gingerbread houses and other community buildings in a 2-3 day project.
After studying rural, suburban, and urban communities students use that knowledge to build a small scale gingerbread map of their own community. As the classroom teacher, you act as City Council President informing students that you have acquired a large plot of land and they are now the City Planners responsible for redesigning the community.
Using the STEM design process, students create a community by activating prior knowledge and considering all needs and wants associated with its members.
Included in this lesson plan:
1. Informational sheet explaining the project details
2. Plan design sheet (set in an imagine cloud template)
3. Persuasive letter writing template
Once finished, students are able to use candy, graham crackers, milk cartons, and other recyclable items to create a small scale model of the community.
