This unit is designed to be an extension of the story Leo the Late Bloomer by Robert Kraus. If you don't have the story, you can view it on YouTube.
After reading the story, discuss the multiple meaning word “bloom.” Explain that the students will make flower blooms with pattern blocks. An Internet Image search of pattern block flowers will result in many models for students, or you can use the ones in this unit. When students are finished with their creations, take a digital image and attach it to the “I made it!” writing template. Have students write one or more sentences about their creation.
The unit include both colored and black and white story character images.
There is a writing recording sheet for the pattern block STEM activity.
There is a front / back story retelling activity.
Photographs of finished products are enclosed.
Photographs of other extension projects are included as well.
