Make STEM real! Provide a real-world investigation that explores the importance of perseverance and learning from failure. Your upper elementary and middle school students will read and answer questions about an actual engineering event that was a failure. They will then add to their comprehension and interest by applying their STEM skills to a related engineering investigation. Each packet includes a reading passage about an engineering historical event, comprehension questions, a vocabulary page, links for additional research, an engineering investigation with student handouts and a teacher guide, inquiry questions, job role cards, a rubric, a reflection page, an engineering design process poster, a poster about perseverance and general STEM teacher notes.
“Fix the Failure – The Grand Teton Dam ” explores dam construction with an emphasis on materials and structural engineering. After reading about the Grand Teton Dam engineering failure, students will explore and test four materials. Students will then construct a dam using those materials and will be challenged to stay within a budget.
