STEM Challenge: Can you design an aluminum foil boat that will float and hold weight of multiple pennies?
This STEM challenge is a class favorite! It is also the first team activity we do in science, which is awesome because this challenge allows students to make multiple attempts with their design! A hands-on experience that allows students to TRY AGAIN!
This lesson requires students to make observations prior to their building process, a Wonderopolis investigation on how boats float, brainstorm, build, make a prediction, investigate, problem solve, collect data, reflect and make a connection to math by using the data they collected.
Pennies, or other coins
Student interactive notebook (optional)
This package contains both full and half-sized worksheets of, a lesson overview, extension overview, challenge goals and rules, materials list, team flag decorating, pre-observation, investigation observation, design brainstorm, predictions, data collection, reflection, Wonderopolis extension, KWL (know, want to know, learned) flip book, and math extension (data discussion).
