Middle school students often have sports related knee injuries. Most cannot articulate the injury, they only know it hurts. The activity is designed to go along with a 7th grade body system unit to enhance student understanding of the relationships between the muscular and skeletal systems, as well as to understand what it means when they hear about a torn meniscus, or a strained ACL. However, it is also a great activity to teach the engineering design process.
This activity has very simple instructions and requires mainly guidance from the teacher once the activity begins. The students are self-paced, it is enjoyable for the teacher, and the finished products are amazing!
