Students will read "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom", and discuss what happened to the letters. Then they will work in small groups to design and build a new "tree" structure that can keep the letters in without falling out or without the structure collapsing.

Balancing Apples
This is a great hands on unit for K-2 students that is aligned with ELA CCSS, and Next Generation Science Standards for Engineering & Design. Students will read "10 Apples Up On Top", and dconduct an experiment to see how many apples they can balance on top of a cup with the use of toothpicks, and with toothpicks.

Students will read the story Peter Rabbit, and be challenged to use specific materials to build a trap to catch Peter Rabbit. There is also a Life Science Extension activity where students can grow new carrots in cups of water, and document the growth over time.

Growing Beanstalks for Jack
Students will read "Jack and the Beanstalk", and discuss what happened to the Jack and the beans. Then they will work in small groups to use growing materials to conduct an experiment on different growing conditions. After the experiment (which should take 20 days), students will use what they know about growing conditions of plants to write a letter to Jack, advising him on the best way to grow his "magic beans".
