The Mag Lev Racer Challenge is a great way to give students practice in the make-test-improve process. They learn from their failures and keep making adjustments until they have a successful product. Successful teams communicate, collaborate, and come up with a researched plan before diving into construction. They are also flexible and willing to give up on their original and go a completely new direction if they find out their design doesn’t work. This project works well in STEM classrooms and offshoots can include graphing results, calculating angles, promoting and selling their new products, making infomercials, live presentations, etc.
