Building several kinds of platforms has proven to be great STEM Challenges! The best part of this trio of challenges is the ease of use. I have provided you with detailed directions and hints and the materials are super easy to gather. In fact, the materials are things you already have!

STEM activities are really just fun for kids! These three challenges are the latest we have tried. We have loved creating platforms using several different supplies. These three STEM challenges will have your students exploring and creating with a variety of materials- each with the added feature of using a budgeting plan to complete the task.
Students will be experimenting with geometric shapes used as a building support and then designing and building a platform. There are specific rules to follow in the construction of the platform and the final structure will be tested with weight. Students must choose wisely and use the supplies well with the added feature of using a budget for the supplies! Team work is essential!
Students will be experimenting with ways to join straws together to use as a building support and then designing and building a platform. Again, the final structure is tested using weights and students must work within a budget.
Students will be experimenting with ways to join craft sticks together to use in building a platform. This is more challenging than it appears due to the size constraints of the task. It is also tested with weights and features a budgeting requirement. There are several variations for this challenge and each one is described in the teacher directions. Also, different constraints posters and lab sheets are included for the different formats.
You will need additional materials for use of these packages.
For Paper Platforms you will need newspaper or heavy-weight paper and tape.
For Straws Platforms you will need Straw and paper clips.
For Craft Stick Platforms you will need craft sticks, hot glue guns, and glue or masking tape.
For each package you will receive: a detailed lesson guide that provides a materials list and then step-by-step procedures to follow to make this a great experience; Helpful Hints that give ideas of specific things to think about while using this package; lab sheets; sample answer sheets from students; and photos to help in your use of the challenges. And more! Each challenge also has a scoring rubric and all the forms are included in an editable format!
