This lesson is designed for students to work with a group to design a replica of the Washington Monument using pasta, straws, and other raw materials to withstand a simulated earthquake.
The lesson ties into real-world events, engages students in productive teamwork (with real-world group roles), open-ended exploration, and uses the engineering design process to research and develop a solution. The lesson also ties in Language Arts standards by having student’s research their own information.

This was a successful project I used at the end of a unit on land forms.
