What is the challenge?

This challenge features the task of using given supplies to create a parachute that will safely land a toy figure on the ground. Specific criteria for the task is given to students along with a box of supplies. Stand back and watch them construct!

BONUS: This challenge now has two versions included! Each has its own section in the resource with teacher's guides, lab sheets, and criteria cards. Here's a perfect idea: Use version 1 early in the school year and later repeat the event using version 2. Will your students remember what they learned after the first experience?

Students record their thinking on lab sheets or a folding graphic organizer- both of which can be used with your Science Interactive Notebooks. Students loved this one and were very interested in seeing how everyone solved this challenge!

What is your prep?

Supplies needed in addition to this package include:

• Version 1 -plastic bags or tissue paper, string, clear tape, rubber bands, paper clips, toy figures, and a container for each group’s supplies. Of course, substitutions can be made for any of these!
• Version 2 - tissue paper, bubble wrap, tape, string, and a toy figure.

NOTE: We used this challenge during the Halloween season with plastic spiders as our cargo. During Easter month we tried it with plastic eggs!
