This bundle contains six challenges featuring Real Life building tasks. These are available separately and as part of smaller bundles. Check the links below before purchasing!

    What are the challenges?

STEM Challenge: Build a Gliding Bridge

Students will build a passenger carrier and a bridge system that includes a moving string and end supports. This will determine the best ride for each team’s carrier. Finally, students will have the opportunity to try a re-design! Materials needed: String, 3-ounce cups, cardstock, ping pong balls, pipe cleaners, craft sticks, paper clips, metal washers, tape, dowel sticks, scissors, hole punchers, calculators, large cups (20-30 ounce) or small buckets, sand, gravel, and clay (modeling clay or modeling dough.

STEM Challenge: Build a Zip Line

Students will build a zip line passenger carrier and then experiment with different types of line for the device and record data. This will determine the best ride for each team’s carrier. Finally, students will have the opportunity to try a re-design! Materials needed: fishing line, plastic cord, string, 3-ounce cups, cardstock, ping pong balls, straws, metal washers, paper clips, tape, skewers or dowel sticks, scissors, hole punchers, calculators, and containers for student supplies.

    STEM Challenge: Build a Pipeline

Students will build a pipeline model after learning a little about where and how pipelines are used. Students can also complete research into a specific country’s use of water pipelines and how they are constructed before having them try building one themselves. Materials needed: Paper, tape, and scissors.

    STEM Challenge Bungee Jumping

Students will experiment with dropping a toy figure with an increasing number of rubber bands – a modified bungee jump! They will keep data tables of the jumps and then average and graph the results. Can they use their data accurately enough to give the doll a safe ride from a much higher height? Materials needed: rubber bands, toy figures (like a 10-inch doll), Measuring tapes, and calculators.

    STEM Challenge Building Ramps

Students will be experimenting with cars and ramps. They will test ramp heights and what happens when weight is added to the cars. Finally, they will use their data as they design and build their own ramps. Materials needed: Cardboard or foam board pieces OR a pre-made ramp system, small cars, pennies (for weights), meter or yardsticks, masking tape, card stock, copy paper, straws, scissors, and hole punchers.

STEM Challenge Build a Flood Barrier

Students will experiment with absorbent materials to try to find the one that absorbs the most water. Then students are challenged to use available items to build a barrier that will slow or stop the flow of water. In addition to the experiment and building of the barrier, students will also work with a budget feature for the task. The building items will be priced and students will choose these while staying within a given budget. Materials needed: 5-6 different items to test for absorbency (like cotton balls and sponges), Styrofoam cups, Graduated cylinders, Dishpans or aluminum trays, Stopwatches, Craft sticks, Straws, Paper clips, Rubber bands, and Masking tape. Optional building materials include sand, modeling dough, or clay.

Each challenge contains a scoring rubric and all forms are provided in an editable file!
