This lab is EASY PREP, it's hands-on, students are engaged, it includes many physics concepts and I give you a link to my PREZI that has the info and scaffolding they need in order to succeed at this lab. I also include TEACHER NOTES and a KEY for easy grading an prep. I tell the kids they are engineers trying to get Knott’s Berry Farm to hire them to design a roller coaster. They do some research by going to a website that allows them to design a roller coaster. However, this page is optional, the kids really enjoy it and it helps them understand the relationship between kinetic and potential energy. But if you don’t have computers available you can just skip this page. Then the rest of the activity they build roller coasters and collect data. It can take anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours, it's up to you.
Materials needed: Inexpensive plumbing insulation from a hardware store, marbles, masking tape, meter stick and timer.
THIS LAB INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING CONCEPTS:
Kinetic energy, potential energy, rolling friction, fluid friction, static friction, momentum, gravity, acceleration, centripetal force and engineering. However, you can edit it to add more concepts for extensions or remove some for Special Ed, EL or lower grades. I've done this lab with 8th and 7th grade mainstream, EL and Special Ed.
