This packet includes a science lab on how sound is created and an engineering challenge that follows the Engineering Design Loop incorporated in a student work-booklet. It includes a lab description for the teacher, hand signals to teach the scientific method, examples of student hypotheses, the lab question with Next Generation Science Standards and Cross Cutting Concepts to post on the wall, and a lab notes handout with illustration box. This lesson was designed around 1st grade NGSS, but could be used in grades K-3 and with schools that have not adopted NGSS. Remember that NGSS links with CCSS in math and ELA. These activities cover many ELA CCSS in Speaking and Listening and Language. Standards of Mathematical Practices 5 is also addressed with the Engineering Challenge. Your students will love it as much as mine!
