Product Description
This 3rd grade S.T.R.E.A.M. lesson will have students use their science/engineering knowledge to carry out a test of a simple machine (e.g. catapult, trebuchet, etc.) in order to solve the problem of slinging a “bone.” Students will read, or have had the book Dogzilla by Dav Pilkey read to them prior to beginning the project. They will also read informational texts provided as well as use the internet (technology) and/or additional texts to create reasoning and show understanding of the problem of creating a machine to shoot a dog bone. Throughout this project students will write in a STREAM Journal that has been created for them. Students are asked to then create an artistic advertisement (e.g. commercial, jingle, poster, etc.) using some form of technology once they have finished their design. There are components of measurement through determining the distance their “bone” has traveled, as well as grade appropriate math for the simple machine’s trajectory for the math portion. Put together this covers all aspects of a S.T.R.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Reading & Research, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) model.
