Students will experience the relative size and distances between the planets by “pacing off” a scale model of the solar system. At each "stop" along the way, students will learn several characteristics about the planets, Earth's moon, the sun, and Pluto. Students will record information in their "passports" about each planet.
Tennessee State Science Standards:
SPI 0507.6.1 Distinguish among the planets according to their known characteristics such as appearance, location, composition, and apparent motion.

This document is a collection of materials created to supplement the activity, “The Thousand Yard Model – The Earth as a Peppercorn”, by Guy Ottewell. His original activity can be found online at the following URL:
I have created the posters, field trip permission form and student passport pages to accompany his activity. In addition, the teacher instructions I have included in this document have been designed for use in the elementary classroom.
