STEM Straw Rocket Challenge

This lesson is written as a student-led challenge using the 5-E Instructional Method (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate). All instructions are provided so that the students are able to conduct the activity independently.
NASA needs more Straw Rocket Engineers!.... Are your students up for the job?
Team Work-Students are placed into Engineering Teams and given 1 of the following jobs:
* Civil Engineer- reads the plans
* Systems engineer- inputs the data
* Design engineer- builds the straw rocket
* Aerospace engineer-flies the rocket
* Electrical engineer- measures distances
Students create a straw rocket and try to reach their target, take measurements record data, then re-design their model using additional materials to make it more aerodynamic. It all adds up to really great Scientific Inquiry-based hands-on learning that is FUN!
Also, GREAT information on NASA's newest, largest and most powerful rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS)!
Several additional challenge options are available if you really want them to feel like engineers in the real world including, doing their own research, using a budget, having launch windows, additional math computations and writing an engineering report.
